Creating Welcoming Spaces for Autism
Often, families with members on the spectrum do not feel welcome, or they are not comfortable in public or at events. Whole Spectrum Autism offers autism acceptance and inclusion by facilitating community engagement, and serving as a voice for families whose loved ones are on the spectrum. Whole Spectrum Autism curates events where autistic children and adults, together with family, friends, and caregivers, can have a great time, relax, and create a sense of both belonging and community.
HealthierJC + Whole Spectrum Autism
Whole Spectrum Autism believes that Building a Culture of Health means creating a supportive environment where the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals on the spectrum is a top priority.
This includes specialized healthcare and therapies that promote awareness and acceptance of autism, provide family resources, foster a sense of belonging and community, and celebrate the unique strengths and abilities of individuals with autism.
How was the Mini-Grant Used?
With the 2023 HealthierJC mini-grant, Whole Spectrum Autism held a series of successful events, offering children on the spectrum a chance to experience things they might not have been previously exposed to. Given the number and different types of 2023 events, Whole Spectrum Autism was able to reach a larger audience, hosted at several Jersey City venues:
- 8th Annual Autism Acceptance Gala
- Painting in the Heights
- WSA Softball Tournament
- Whole Spectrum Autism Swimming Day
- Lego Play with WSA
The Whole Spectrum Autism programming funded by the mini-grant served 200–250 minority and low-income Jersey City residents with autism and disabilities, primarily from Wards D and E.
Making a Difference…
With Healthier JC’s generous grant funding, we’ve been able to create meaningful connections through arts & crafts, healthy habits, and fostering inclusivity and joy within the autism community.”
— Sherry Singh, Founder, Whole Spectrum Autism
A local Jersey City mom of an autistic child shared “My son and I had an awesome time… and he always enjoys seeing some of his friends at your events. As an only child, his being able to socialize with other children fills my heart.”
A South Bronx mom of a 10 year-old diagnosed with high-functioning autism, sensory processing disorder and developmental delay travelled to Jersey City to participate in Whole Spectrum Autism because her son always missed out on fun things to do. “It’s amazing to see the free things that Whole Spectrum Autism is doing for the kids. I pray this program can be extended to the Bronx.”
Singh also acknowledged that Whole Spectrum Autism needs to provide more services for older autistic individuals and expand its presence in the tri-state area.
