Tony Goodson, Commander of VFW post 2294

The Samuel R. Shelton VFW Post 2294 has been serving Jersey City’s veteran community since its establishment in 1931. Funding from the HealthierJC initiative has enabled VFW Post 2294 to continue its hands-on approach of providing for their brothers and sisters in arms. We asked them the same five questions as all of our 2018 Mini-Grantees, and here are their answers:

What does building a Culture of Health mean to you?
The Samuel R. Shelton VFW Post 2294 is a staple of the community that has steadfastly maintained assistance and readiness programming for local veterans.

What would you identify as your most significant accomplishment so far towards building a greater culture of health?
The Post runs a monthly program called Feed The Vets, where Jersey City veterans, regardless of their eligibility to enroll in VFW, are welcome to enjoy food, fellowship, and presentations by invited speakers.

Tell us about your team. What do they do to build a culture of health in Jersey City?
VFW Post 2294 provides direct support to veterans in need. We have provided transportation for veterans to medical appointments at the Veterans Administration, and have provided food assistance for local veterans who would otherwise go hungry.

How do you plan on using your Culture of Health mini-grant?
There is no change in our programming – our mission is to assist local veterans in any way possible. Veterans are walk-ins, invitees, and some are referred to us. We challenge those we meet in the community to seek us out for assistance and to attend the monthly Feed The Vets events.

If you knew of an organization that was thinking of joining the Partnership for a Healthier JC, what would you say to encourage them to join?
Jersey City’s Partnership for a Healthier JC is committed to providing what you need to the most… funds to make your program efficient and rewarding in providing those who matter the most, the citizens of Jersey City.
