Soldier On is a private nonprofit organization committed to ending veteran homelessness. Since 1994, the organization has been providing homeless veterans with transitional housing and supportive services. In 2010, Soldier On opened the first Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Community, a permanent housing cooperative that provides formerly homeless veterans with safe, sustainable, affordable housing – transitioning them from homelessness to homeownership. This housing model will be replicated nationally as Soldier On continues to change the end of the story for homeless veterans throughout the country. In 2021, Soldier On opened the doors to its' first Gordon H. Mansfield Community in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. In 2012, Soldier On was granted The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) grant and implemented that program in several states, including New Jersey. Soldier On is a case management program for single veterans or veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. Soldier On currently has this grant-based program in four states, and in New Jersey, Soldier On has this grant in the following nine counties: Essex, Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, and Somerset. Soldier On provides in-home case management, referral services for employment, veteran benefits, and legal assistance, peer support specialist mentoring and transportation as well as temporary financial assistance for housing to veterans facing homelessness. Operating under a mobile case management model, Soldier On staff meets veterans wherever they are to ensure that the barrier of transportation is no barrier to helping veterans in need. Soldier On’s mission is to provide veterans with the services and support they need to carry on healthy, productive lives in apartments of their own.
Building a Culture of Health in Jersey City means creating an environment where Veterans and the broader community have access to the resources they need to live healthier, more stable lives.
